Here’s a simple tutorial on how to install a custom “m33″ firmware on your Playstation Portable.
(Works for both Phat and Slim)
Important!
First of all, if your running on official firmware other than 1.5, YOU CANNOT install customfirmware on it. You will need a Pandora’s Battery to downgrade you PSP to 1.5 then eventually install custom firmware on it..
If you want to check my guide on making a Pandoras Battery, check it out here.
What you’ll need:
1. A PSP with firmware 3.52 M33-4 or higher. Previous versions of M33 won’t work.
(Battery must be atleast at 78% or else the installer wont work, it will just tell you to recharge)
Note: You cannot install a Customfirmware on an official firmware, the only official firmware you can install m33 is version 1.5. Which means if you got something like 3.80 official firmware, you need to downgrade it to 1.5 using a pandora’s Battery
2. A USB cable
3. An official sony EBOOT.PBP. You can get the latest firmware from sony here . Or you can look for the right EBOOT file that you need here.
(Example: If your currently on like, 3.71 and you want to upgrade it to 3.71 m33, you’ll need to get the official sony 3.71 EBOOT.PBP)
4. An m33 installer for your current official firmware. Which you can get here.
( You have to select the m33 installer that matches you current firmware, example, if you have 3.71, then
obviously you’ll need the m33 installer for the 3.71 )
5. A Wifi connection (Optional, will explain later)
Installation instructions:
1. Download the installer then unzip the files anywhere in you computer.
( I suggest to your desktop, so its easy to find and you can just delete it later)
2. Plug in your PSP and go to USB mode.
3. Copy the UPDATE directory into you X:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE.
(where “X” is the drive your PC recognizes your PSP)
Note: the program will not even show if you copy it to a different folder than that.
4. Rename the EBOOT.PBP of the Official Sony updater which you got from here
to “xxx.PBP” (if the EBOOT.PBP is from the 3.71 update, then rename it to 371.PBP, if it was from 3.80, then rename it to 380.PBP, anyway, you get the point..) and copy it to X:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE.
Note: It wont work if you try using a 3.71 EBOOT.PBP and renaming it to 380.PBP, You need to have the compatible EBOOT.PBP file for it to work.
5. If you are in the Phat PSP, make sure you have configured the psp to run the game folder in the 3.XX kernel.)
6. Go to Game -> Memory Stick and look for the m33 updater icon.
7. Execute the program.
(If you have idstorage corrupted due to a downgrader, the program will ask you to correct it automatically so the update can continue.)
8. Press X, and the Sony updater will begin. Sit and enjoy while Sony code installs the M33 update
9. When finished, the updater will ask you to reboot (pressing X or O). DO IT. Do not skip this step
shutting down the psp by yourself, or you’ll end with a brick.
Additional Notes:
(If you already have 3.80 M33 custom firmware or higher and has a Wifi Access.)
1. Turn on your PSP and got to Settings -> Network Update.
2. Select your Wifi access point.
3. The PSP will search for an update and it will ask you if you want to download it.
4. After you it is finished downlaoding, the updater will ask you if you want to run the installer now or later.
(If you selected no you will exit the updater but you can access the installer again by going to Game -> Memory Stick)
5. Run the installer. After the update you PSP will automatically restart.
6. And you’re done!
There you have it, if you got some questions just leave a comment and i’ll get back to you later.

3 questions:
1) I’m planing to buy tomorrow a PSP Slim. In order to change to CustomFirmware, what are the aspects I have to look at by buyin it?
2) Before doing that update how can I do a system recovery copy of the actual software?
3) Is it enough to do the steps you described above to play the *.iso games?
Thanks in advance for your response!
One more thing:
To do that, do I need a special battery? (I think it is called pandora)
Thanks!
@Mark
1. If you you’re gonna buy a new PSP Slim tomorrow chances are it will have the latest firmware installed, like 3.90 or 3.93 or something.
Just ask the vendor what firmware is running on the PSP you’re buying.
2. As far as i know, you really cant make a backup of you firmware, you only can either upgrade it or downgrade your PSP using a Pandora’s Battery.
3. You need to have A customfirmware installed on your PSP so you can play *.iso/*.cso games, and frankly speaking, get the most out of your Playstation Portable.
You’ll only need a Pandora’s Battery if you want to downgrade.
First of all, THANK YOU for your quick and valuable response!
Just to cut the long story short I’ll bother you only with few questions because I’m not sure if I should by the PSP Slim:
1) if I buy a PSP Slim as you mentioned with firmware 3.90 or 3.93 (higher then 3.52 m33-4), would I be able to instal the custom software based on the steps you described above?
2) do I understand it correctly? Installing a custom software is not related with upgrading or downgrading, so is it just adding simply an additional software to PSP which makes it possible to play *.iso or *.cso games?
3) I’ve read about some emulators (Game Boy, NES…), the method you described makes them able to work as well?
Again, thanks in advance for your response!
Cheers
Sorry one more question:
Because I’m talking about a completely new psp from the shop which was not cracked before, can the method you desribed be also applied for this kind of PSP?
Thanks!
Yes =)
@ Mark
1. Yes
2. Yes.
3. Yes, these emulators are applications for your PSP which needs you to be running on m33 firmware in oder to play them.
=)
Thanks again for your response!
Sorry for bothering you with so many questions but I’m very new on the field of PSP.
I’m just only a bit confused because what you say here sounds just GREAT for me, but you said in the first point that it is required to have a “PSP with firmware 3.52 M33-4 or higher” but doesn’t this “M33-4″ mean that it has to have already the older version of the CustomSoftware?
I talked to a guy who said that if I buy a brand new PSP then it is impossible to install m33 until it is cracked with pandora. Is he right?
As this guy explained me that the format of the version number is originally without this “m33″ before the custom software is installed e.g. 3.52 but after installing it, it will turn to 3.52 m33. Is it correct?
Sorry for pushing you with this questions, I have to know these things because I really want to buy that PSP Slim today
) That is the reason why I’m asking almost the same question all the time
If you could reply to all my questions I will be more then happy
THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION FOR ME NOW IS: If I buy a PSP today with firmware lets say 3.90 or 3.93 (without M33) will the 3.90 M33 CustomSoftware from Dark Alex work for me based on that method you described?
REALLY THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR RESPONSE!
Cheers
hehe, well thats what this blog is for.. =)
3.52 M33-4 or higher means that it will work for any customfirmware as long as it is higher than 3.52 m33-4.
Q: I talked to a guy who said that if I buy a brand new PSP then it is impossible to install m33 until it is cracked with pandora. Is he right?
A: Wrong, you only have to use a pandora’s battery when you want to downgrade, like from 3.90 to 3.80 or something lower. and when you have a busted PSP but that is not likely to happen unless you messed with your PSP too much.
Q: As this guy explained me that the format of the version number is originally without this “m33″ before the custom software is installed e.g. 3.52 but after installing it, it will turn to 3.52 m33. Is it correct?
A: yup, thats correct.
When you buy your PSP ask first what firmware it is on, just dont get the 3.93 version because currently theres no m33 customfirmware for it.
This will work on all firmwares from 3.52 m33-4 – 3.90 regardless if it is already customfirmware or not.
Where can i get a pandora’s Battery?
@Tech84
Hi! Thanks for your help again!
I’ve bought it. It has a system 3.80 but when did everything step by step as you described then it didn’t work because it says that my system is already 3.80 and there is no need for update
Do you know what can I do with that now?
Thanks in advance!
Cheers
Hi! I tried now to install 3.90 m33 but it says that “The game could not be started (80020148)”
Is something wrong with my new PSP?
Please HELP!
Thanks!
how that on psp
@mark
are you still on 3.80?
(maybe you donwloaded the EBOOT.PBP file thats for the 3.95 version coz that whats on the playstation site now.)
1. get the m33 installer for the 3.80 from here:
http://www.dark-alex.org/
(select the “Release” version)
2. get the 380.PBP from here:
http://exophase.com/files/psp/380.PBP
3. extract the 380_m33.rar file and place the UPDATE folder to your X:/PSP/GAME
(so it should look this this: PSP/GAME/UPDATE)
4. then place the 3.80.PBP inside the update folder then proceed to step 6 in the tutorial.
Hi!
What you describe is exactly what I did.
I know that now the 3.95 version is on official site so I’ve downloaded from somewhere else the 3.80.pbp and then copied it into PSP/GAME/UPDATE. Then I’ve downloaded from Alex the “Relase” and copied its contanin to PSP/GAME/UPDATE so I had 3 files now under PSP/GAME/UPDATE the 3.80.pbp, eboot.pbp, and u 235.prx.
I have actually 3.80 in my PSP so the system does not allow me to install it again. It says that I have already this version and there is now need for update.
What can I do?
Thanks!
when you go to Game -> Memory stick does the installer icon has an m33 written on it?
try checking you System Settings -> System Information, and look at the system software.
(i have a hunch your psp’s already got an 3.80 m33 on it…)
I’ve checked many times the System Settings -> System Information but it is still 3.80.
The installer icon does have an m33 written on it, but when I try to start it a message appears that I have already the 3.80 version and there is no need for an update. It simply does not alow to lunch it! I think that only upgrading is possible.
Maybe I should try with 3.90 m33 again. I tried it yesterday, then this “PSP” logo on white background appeard, then the screen went black for a few seconds and then a message appeard “The game could not be started (80020148)”.
The 390.PBP should be copied also under PSP/GAME/UPDATE? If yes, then I did it correctly.
Could you maybe please send me a short description with links to files how to update to 3.90 m33?
I’m sorry for bothering you that much but I’m just a bit worried that I have spent a lot of money for the PSP and a memory card and now I’m afraid that it is not updatable with m33.
Thank you in advance and I hope it will be my last question.
I found something else on the internet that says that the original software can not be updated with m33. What you think about that, is that true?
http://winterheim.wordpress.com/2008/02/01/390-m33-released-how-to-update/
Damn!
I hate being wrong. i tried installing an official 3.90 firmware on my 3.80 m33. And found out the hard way that the only Official firmware you can install a custom firmware on is 1.5. Since i dont have a pandora’s Battery a had to go to this store and paid this guy like 10 friggin bucks to downgrade it to 1.5 so i can install the m33 customfirmware for it.
My apologies if i mislead you thinking you can install m33 firmware on any Official firmware other than 1.5
Thanks for your help anyway!
Lucky you because here I have to pay bloody 60 bucks for that downgrade – shameless hungry leeches!!! Most probaly I’ll have it ready tomorrow. I’ll let you know how did it work
Cheers
Hi Tech84,
I have now a cracked PSP it works perfect now.
It is on 3.80 m33-5 version, with your method can I update it to 3.90?
Thanks again for helping!
Cheers
hey how do i get pandoras battery
please send me back quick
i need to know how cuz i wanna downgrade it to 1.5 to get custom firmware
by the way i love your website . please send me back. thanks
will need an extra battery to convert it to pandora bcose they say if it is already pandora it cant be used anymore as a normal batery you can only use it for downgrading purposes only.
@Mark
yes the guide will now work for your upgrade from 3.80 m33-5 to 3.90 m33. just dont upgrade it to 3.93 or 3.95 because there is no m33 for thses firmwares.
@Antonio
Yes youll need an extra battery to convert it to a pandoras battery. I have a guide here somewhere maybe il post it later…
i just got a slim psp with system software 3.95 i wanna down load custom software so i can play games i downloaded how can i do this can anyone help me with this
how do i change F:/ to X:/?
thanks1
@jojo
currently, there is no customfirmware for 3.95, you have to dongrade it first to 1.5 and then install m33 custom firmware so that then you can play downloaded games from your mem stick.
@jeff
you dont have to change it, i only indicated “X:/” as an example… the X is probably the same as your “F” drive
have on psp with update 3.95 put update 3.90
have please tell me now
Hi Tech84,
How can i update my PSP ver 3.40oe to 3.80 m33-5 or 3.90 m33?
@cornflakes
you have to install 3.52 M33-4 first in order to install 3.90 m33 because the 3.90 m33 installer wont work with firmwares lower than 3.52
@pero
you first have to downgrade it to firmware version 1.5, then you can install customfirmware for it.
Hey, I got a PSP fat last summer(2007), and I’ve only used the official versions of firmware up to 3.95. That’s what I got right now. (3.95). I know that I can’t get custom firmware yet, but I was wondering, how I could make a pandora battery without openning it up or screwing up my seystem. I really want to know, cause I want to “copy” PS1 games through my PC to my mem. stick pro duo.
Also, How would I copy the games? Where would I put them?
PS1 copying: How would I disable the security sensor?
Hey, Do you know if a custom firmware will be released for 3.95 without downgrading to 1.5? Is that possible?
Hi, again.
Quick question as I think of it, How do you use th IR sensor on the fat PSP? (model 1001).
Ummmmm…..
Can you copy, or “BURN” Ps1 games on your PSP fat without custom Firmware? Like maybe… PSP ver. 3.95?
I really want to know.
Many thanks. ***
Does this work on psp version 3.95? coz that’s what I have and it keeps on saying “The game could not be started” I downloaded the psptube at qj.net…plzzz….help!
thanks
the only choice is to downgrade it to 1.50 then put custom firmware on it
@secret
elvis is right, you cant install customfirmware on any official firmware unless your on 1.5.
@Chris
Yes, you can “burn” your psone games, POPS works on all firmwares i think 3.71 and up with custom and noncustom firmwares..
tech84,my brother has a psp slim ver 3.90 can he install 3.90 m33 without a pandora battery and magic memory stick
can you downgrade without a pandora battery for the fat psp?
thanks.
Tech,
how would I burn the PS1 games? I tryed, on ver. 3.95(normat firmware), but nothing happened! What do I name the file to copy the PS1 game into? how do I disable the security if there is one? What is the conversion proces?
thanks.
Tech, again,
I tied looking on the internet on how to copy PS1 games to PSP, and it said I need a special software, to manipulate the ISO files and such. I’m trying this without a PS3. SO, are they right? Please help. I want to play Gran Turismo 1 and all those classics on my PSP!
thanks.
Hey i need to know exactly how i can downgrade from 3.95 to 3.90 m33 on my psp slim.. i cant understand much on this but your blog did help a little i just dont know what to do..
do i need to create a pandora battery and if so do i need special firmware?
Do i really need to buy a battery for doing the pandora or can i use a memory stick?
can i downgrade from 3.95?
Do i have to downgrade to 1.5 first then can i go up to 3.90 m33 or can i just do a straight conversion from what i have.
Just if possible tell me in order what programs to install from first to last in as simple order as you can i will find the files and do so.. i just dont want to brick it, since i dont know what to do first! Thanks for any help you can provide i am a complete noob and dont understand alot of forums!
Nevermind i looked and found the correct information somewhere else

hi,
this site is very helpful,but i have 1 qus.
can i upgrade to custom upgrade without using pandora’s Battery… pls reply
you need to have a pandora’s battery (or you can just borrow it from someone ) because there is no other known way to downgrade you PSP.
tech
I was update my PSP to 3.95, but when i start playing ang go to game to my memory stick it appears “THERE ARE NO GAMES”
Can you help me with that?
Did CSO and ISO files work on 3.95 ver.
Many Thankz!
Hey tech,
Thanks for helping me out. About the Sandisk Mem. Sticks… Are they not as good as SONY? Do they have a shorter “life expectancy”? Why does SONY mem. sticks cost almost 20-30$ more than LEXAR and SANDISK?
Thanks a million.
PEACE!
@ xjigzx
ouch, there is currently no m33 version for the 3.95 firmware, which means you need to downgrade your PSp using a pandora’s battery.
@ Chris
Sony costs more because, well, er… its the brand thing you know…
its also a matter of preferences, as for me i’d choose Sony…
and if your gonna get a Sony one, suggest checking this out:
http://tech84.wordpress.com/2008/03/06/watch-out-for-fake-sony-memory-stick-pro-duo-magicgate-cards/
Thanks tech.
Tech
Thankz.
one more thing do you have a software on how to downgrade using PSP slim battery and pandora software. can you give me a link? Please.
Coz i read something on a forum that they can downgrade using a psp slim battery and a pandora software.
Many Thankz!!
i dont have the software right now but maybe later i’ll look for the download and post it and if dont get lazy maybe post a guide on how to make a pandora’s battery… =)
You are the greatest palz!!! THUMBS UP for you!!
What is pandora battery?
It’s a modified PSP battery that you can use to downgrade your psp to a lower firmware version and repair “Bricked” PSP’s…
hi tech84, need help pls. i bought a psp slim with version 3.8 without sumthing like m-33.. i dont know what it is.. i cant play any downloaded games, my friends said i should update it with wifi. so i did.. its version became 3.95 but still without m33.. i assume it needs the m33 as i saw from other psp’s version. it said to your instruction that it should be downgraded first to 1.5 to download m33.. im confused, from other instruction it said it should have custom firmware to downgrade it to 1.5 with the need of pandora’s battery… where can i download it? and do i have to buy new battery for downgrading? sorry for being demanding… pls give me appropriate instruction.. i really need help tnx tnx!!! take care…
Hey Tech,
Me again. I was researching “making a Pandora” battery, and apparrently, you can open up the battery and manually change it to a Pandora Battery. It looks tricky. I am almost ready to purchase one of those “upgraded” PSP (fat only) batteries. You know, the ones with 2200 amh or something like that, instead of 1800. I am going to convert my 1800 battery to Pandora and keep the 2200 for playing games. I will also use my Pandora to fix other people’s damaged PSP’s. What I plan to do is ask people if they have “broken” PSP’s and buy them off them for like 15-20$ and take them home to fix them and then resell them to another store. I will keep one though to use as a “tester” for custom firmwares and applications. Smart huh? What do you think?
Anyways, Thanks for your support Tech.
Peace Brother!
how can u get a custom firmware if u need custom firmware to get custom firmware?
@jes,
You can manually convert your battery, you just need the specified tools. Nothing huge. I have a website, which advertizes this one, mine is more so on info and howto’s. I will be adding a page on how to make a PANDORA BATTERY, without custom firmware. You can check it out if you want.
My website is {cppsp.webs.com} (without the ‘{ }’)
Alright? Thanks.
Respect to Tech84, Peace Brother!
*Chris*
@imconfuze0811
it means your running on official firmware, you need to have a customfirmware in order to play downlaoded games and other stuff with your PSP.
@chris
nice idea, nice way to get some bucks rollin’ hehe..
thanks for helping out! =)
Hey thanks tech,
I thought it was a pretty sly thing to do. I would let some of them know how I do it, and fix it for them for a lower price, that way they could keep their PSPs.
No problem for helping out. I research on all the official sites, and I do some of my own tests, along side with your site. I know what it’s like to want to use my device to its fullest potential, so I get it and I like to help.
Plus, you get alot of mail, it’s the least I can to for all your generousity.
Thanks, again.
Peace.

hi mark. i ran installer firmware 3.95 but later realised that it;
1 can’t play homebrew game
2 i can’t do the usual boot with power on + “R”. how do i solve this problem?
3 can i downgrade from 3.95 to 1.50 because i’m currently stuck at the above process.
4 alternatively can i downgrade from 3.95 to 3.71 then only downgrade to 1.50.
5 i heard 1.50 can play most homebrew games. please help.
6 thank you so very much!!!!
Hi there tech84,i too have a slim psp with sony official firmware 3.80 on it..I have a battery service tool so i can convert my battery into a tool battery to put the psp into service mode if neccesary..Can you please tell me how i can install m33 custom firmware onto this psp,your help would be really much appreciated,craig..
@tech foolish,
You need to now downgrade your PSP to 1.5 SONY firmware, using a Pandora Battery. You can either create a Pandora Battery by installing the software, but you need custom firmware for that (which you don’t have) or you can ‘manually convert your Battery. You can learn this step at my website, under the ‘PSP How-To’ page. My website is {cppsp.webs.com} If you got any questions, leave me one (or more) in the questoins & Answers page.
@craig,
You must also install custom firmware by downgrading to 1.5 or earlier. You cannot run the software until you have this. Instead you can convert your Battery manually. You can learn step, by step instructions on how to do this at my website. {cppsp.webs.com} Check it out.
Thanks for posting.
*Chris*
I just got a psp slim and I have 0fw 3.95 and I want to downgrade to 3.80m33-5, I tried catb50 magic memory stick creator v2.0 lite but it wont copy to my memory stick because I have driver F on my psp. is there any way around this?
@amarillo8380,
Your drive wouldn’t affect the save options. Plus you can’t downgrade without a Pandora Battery. Check out my website to see how you can do this in the easiest steps you could ever come across. Check it out. If you have any questions, leave some with me in the questions and answers page.
Tell me if it worked out.
@everyone
if you have a psp slim you CAN’T downgrade to OFW 1.5. the only thing you can do is to crate a magic memory stick with your computer (so that the CFW in the memory stick is 3.52 m33 or above) and create a pandora battery. You can find videos of this procedure in youtube or go to http://www.darkalex.org to find an exhaustive list of details on how to do it. This procedure consists in opening the battery and cutting a leg in the chipboard (hardmod). this pretty much damages the battery, but you could bring it back to normal by soldering the leg back to the chipboard or putting a switch on it.
what you could also do to create a pandora battery is:
ask a friend that already has custom firmware to create one using a homebrew software downloadable from http://www.pspmod.com (softmod). After that you instert the memory stick first and then the battery. if everything was done correctly the psp should start by itself and begin reading the mem.stick. if you have a psp slim nothing may show upon the screen, but if both LED’s on the left are flashingit means everything is fine. wait about five minutes after the LED’s stop flashing and then restart your psp without the pandora bettery.
there you go! custom firmware!
@pato,
you’re right. Good job. Making the PANDORA battery is different with the fat and the slim batteries.
“Damn!

Any steps on how to downgrade to 1.5 ? Pls. help
I’m using psp slim by the way, can i use a friend’s pandora battery just to downgrade to 1.5, then if i have a custom firmware already can i use my original battery again?
Kindly email me or post the steps on how to downgrade to 1.5
Really need help, thanks. More power to your blog!
@Tech84:
First of all, you have the simplest explanation of things, and thanks for all your help. I myself am a newbie to the modded psp world. I received a psp slim as a gift, it came from Singapore with Custom Firmware 3.80 m33-5. I really don’t want to mess up my PSP, but I do want to upgrade the firmware if this is possible. looking at your tutorial, do I only have to follow the bottom portion of instructions, or is that in addition to everything else. Also, since I already have custom firmware, do I need pandora’s battery? Thanks again!
-Les
@les
you will only need a pandora’s battery if you want to downgrade to a lower firmware or to fix a “bricked” PSP.
although you wont really need it unless you do lots of stuff with your psp (ex. experimenting with it and stuff…) still , having the battery would be better… =)
the bottom portion of the tutorial is just, er… and addition to everything else as you say it… hehe =)
i have a running 3.52 m33-4 on my psp but when i tried installing/upgrading a CFW 3.71 or 3.8 …it says it need a 3.52 m33-3 or higher…how come i cant install? thanks need help this is the first time i encountered this error…usually i upgrade my psp with no problem at all. THANKs
hi! how could i convert psp so that i could use downloadable games.. somebody told me that he’s using phat battery… how is that so? please HELp..thanks!

Hey,
My site now has a forum. Come check it out! discuss anything, including the upcoming PSP 2!!!! Come check it out at: ‘www.cppsp.webs.com’. “Chat with ya there. ;D
@oker
dude read what’s on the post and on the comments. you’ll find what you need to know there!
first question: i have a psp slim version 4.0. is there anyway i can make it into a 3.90 m33 without paying 60$ for a new battery, or without converting my battery into pandora (if i convert my battery into pandora, does it still work as a battery?)
is there anything i can do to make my battery last longer? (and i don’t mean the “power save” opting in the psp settings)
hi. i really dont play PSP but my brothers does. he keeps asking me on how to install a game that he jsut downloaded. its an EBOOT.PBP file. i copied it in ISO folder but i think it doesnt work.. can any one tell me how to install it..

how are you? anyways, I have a question. My psp slim was already modified when I recieved it as a gift, from Singapore. I’m intending on re-painting it because it has a couple scratches. My question is, does opening the psp slim after it’s been modified endanger the hardware?
Obviously the company I’m sending it to for repainting are going to handle the hardware with care, but I don’t know anything about what’s done to the hardware, so I wouldn’t want the psp to get corrupt once the casing is open. Any feedback would help, thanks!!

what you guys have there right now are PSPs installed with official firmwares, you need to have customfirmwares in order to play Games from your Mem. Sticks.
what you guys need is a Pandora’s battery, you need it to downgrade your firmware to 1.5 and from then you can install custom firmware on your PSP.
If anyone one asks about creating a Pandora’s battery, check out my guide on the new site here:

Its the software thats runs your PSP, its the software that makes your PSP do stuff the PSP is designed to do.
(Im sorry i cant really give a technical answer at the top of my mind right now)
